The Honest Guide

Custom Tailor in Thailand: what nobody tells you before you book a fitting

Bangkok has the volume. Phuket has the convenience. Khao Lak has been quietly cutting well-fitted suits since 2002, without the tuk-tuk commission games. Here's how to tell the difference before you hand over a deposit.

Know The Market

"Thailand" isn't one tailoring market. It's three.

Every city built its tailoring reputation on a different customer. Knowing which one you're walking into changes what you should expect to pay, and what you should watch for.

High Volume

Bangkok

The largest concentration of tailors in the country, from genuine multi-generation houses to shops that exist purely to catch tourists near Sukhumvit and the Grand Palace.

  • Best selection of premium imported cloth
  • Highest density of tout / commission-driven scam shops
  • Worth it if you already have a specific, vetted address
Resort Convenience

Phuket

Dense with tailors catering to short-stay beach tourists. Convenient if you're based there, but resort-area rent tends to show up in the price tag more than in the stitching.

  • Easy to find near hotel strips
  • Prices often carry a tourist-zone premium
  • Quality varies as widely as in Bangkok
Where We Are

Khao Lak

A smaller, quieter market. Fewer tailors overall, but the ones with real track records built their client base through hotel referrals and repeat travelers, not street commission.

  • Less foot traffic means less incentive to run bait-and-switch
  • Hotel pickup and in-room fittings around JW Marriott, Sentido Graceland, Merlin Beach
  • Same core fabric sourcing as Bangkok, without the tout economy
Before You Book

The pattern behind almost every bad suit story

Tap each one. Almost every disappointing tailoring experience in Thailand follows one of these five patterns.

1

You were brought there by a tuk-tuk driver, tout, or "friendly local"

Drivers and touts are commonly paid a commission, often a large share of what you spend, for delivering customers. That cost has to come from somewhere, and it's usually the fabric.

2

The deal is only "good for today"

Artificial urgency is a pressure tactic, not a real promotion. A tailor confident in their work doesn't need a countdown to get you to commit.

3

You never see the actual bolt of fabric

A common bait-and-switch: you're shown a premium sample book, then your garment is quietly cut from a cheaper, similar-looking roll. Ask to watch the cut, or at least see the exact bolt.

4

They promise a finished suit in a few hours

Genuine made-to-measure work needs at least one fitting between cutting and delivery. Same-day "custom" suits are almost always pre-made stock with a quick hem.

5

Recent reviews are missing, thin, or all negative about fabric quality

A shop that's genuinely served travelers for years will have a real, dated review trail on Google or TripAdvisor, not just a laminated printout inside the shop.

We wrote the longer version of this after hearing the same stories from guests for years.

What honest tailoring actually costs in Thailand, 2026

Straight Answers

Custom tailoring in Thailand: the real questions

Is custom tailoring in Thailand actually cheaper than back home?

Usually yes, once you compare like-for-like fabric and construction. The same fabric grade can cost two to three times more in Europe or the US. The savings only hold up if the tailor is honest about what fabric they're actually using.

Is Bangkok, Phuket, or Khao Lak better for a custom suit?

Bangkok has the most choice and the most scam shops. Phuket is convenient but often carries a resort premium. Khao Lak has fewer tailors, but the established ones run on hotel referrals and repeat guests rather than street touts, which changes the incentive to cut corners.

How long does a custom suit take?

Measurements on day one, a first fitting a day or two later, and final adjustments before delivery, typically two to four days. Be cautious of anyone promising a finished, fitted suit within a few hours.

What should a suit actually cost in 2026?

Roughly ฿5,000–12,000 for a single suit depending on fabric grade, with premium imported wool running higher. See the full breakdown on our price list.

How do I avoid tailor scams in Thailand?

Skip any tailor introduced by a tuk-tuk driver or street tout, ask to see the actual bolt of fabric, get pricing in writing before you commit, and check for recent, dated reviews on Google or TripAdvisor.
