Thai silk is one of the best souvenirs you can take home from Thailand. It has a rich shimmer, a soft crispness and colours that seem to change as the light moves across it.
But not everything sold as “Thai silk” is the real thing. In this guide, we explain how to tell real silk from fake, which garments suit it best, and how to look after it so it lasts for years.

What Makes Thai Silk Special?
Thai silk is traditionally handwoven, and you can see it in the fabric. Compared with smooth, machine-made silks, it has a few signature features:
- A two-tone shimmer. Weavers often use one colour for the lengthwise threads and another for the crosswise threads. As you move, the fabric shifts between the two shades.
- A slightly textured surface. Small bumps and uneven threads, called slubs, are a sign of handwork, not a flaw.
- More body. Thai silk is a little heavier and crisper than many other silks. It holds its shape well, which makes it great for tailoring.
How to Spot Real Thai Silk
Fake silk, usually polyester, is common in tourist markets. Here’s how to check:
- Look at the shine. Real silk has a soft, changing glow. Polyester has a flat, even, almost plastic shine from every angle.
- Feel the texture. Real Thai silk feels smooth but slightly uneven, and it warms up quickly in your hand. Synthetic fabric often feels slippery and stays cool.
- Check the weave. Perfectly even, machine-flat fabric with no slubs at all is often a sign of synthetic.
- Ask for a burn test. A good tailor won’t mind burning a single thread from the edge. Real silk smells like burning hair and turns to soft ash. Polyester melts into a hard bead and smells like plastic.
- Be wary of very low prices. Handwoven silk takes time to make. If the price seems too good to be true, it probably isn’t real.

What Can You Have Made in Thai Silk?
Dresses and evening gowns
Thai silk is perfect for cocktail dresses, evening gowns and wedding outfits. Its natural structure works beautifully for fitted bodices and full skirts. Many guests choose it for Christmas and New Year gala dinners or weddings.
Shirts
A Thai silk shirt is a great choice for evening wear or special occasions. It feels light on the skin and looks elegant without trying too hard. At Mark One Tailor, Thai silk shirts start from 3,500 THB.
Blouses
For women, a silk blouse is one of the most versatile pieces you can own. It works with tailored trousers for the office or with a skirt for dinner.
Ties, pocket squares and waistcoats
Small pieces make a big impact. A silk tie or pocket square adds colour to a plain suit, and a silk waistcoat stands out at a wedding. Ask us about prices for these in the shop.
Asian-style dresses
Thai silk is a classic choice for traditional and Asian-inspired designs. See some ideas in our post on Asian-style dresses from Khao Lak.
Is Thai Silk Good for Hot Weather?
Yes, mostly. Silk is a natural fibre and breathes well, so it’s comfortable on warm evenings. It can show sweat marks in very hot sun, though, so for daytime outdoor events, choose a lighter colour or a looser fit. For daily beachwear, linen or cotton is a better choice.
How to Care for Thai Silk
With a little care, a Thai silk garment can last for many years:
- Dry clean structured pieces like dresses, jackets and waistcoats.
- Hand wash shirts and blouses in cold water with a gentle detergent made for delicates.
- Never wring or twist wet silk. Press out the water gently with a towel.
- Dry in the shade. Direct sunlight can fade the colour.
- Iron on low heat, on the inside of the garment, while it’s still slightly damp.
- Spray perfume before dressing, not on the silk, as it can leave marks.
- Store it in a cool, dry place, in a breathable cotton bag rather than plastic.
Why Choose a Tailor for Thai Silk?
Buying silk fabric is only half the job. Silk is delicate, slippery to cut and unforgiving of mistakes, so it needs an experienced tailor. A well-cut silk garment drapes naturally on your body. A poorly cut one twists and puckers at the seams.
At Mark One Tailor, you can see and feel our Thai silk collection before choosing, and every piece is made to your measurements, with a fitting before delivery. Learn more about our custom tailoring in Thailand, or check our price list.
