Bangkok vs Phuket vs Khao Lak: Where Should You Get a Suit Made in Thailand?

Most people don’t come to Thailand just for a suit. They come for the beaches, the food and the islands, and somewhere along the way they decide it’s the perfect chance to get something tailored.

So where should you do it? We’re a tailor in Khao Lak, so we’re not neutral, and we won’t pretend to be. But we’ve also met thousands of guests who had suits made elsewhere first. Here’s our honest view of which place makes sense for your trip.

Choose Bangkok If…

You’re in the city for a few days and already have a specific, well-reviewed tailor in mind. Bangkok has the most tailors and fabric in Thailand, and some excellent long-standing houses.

The downside is that it’s also the easiest place to end up in the wrong shop. Around the busy tourist areas, many “friendly” recommendations from tuk-tuk drivers come with a commission attached. If you go to Bangkok without doing your research, you’re taking a chance.

Good fit: business travellers, people with a tailor already recommended by a friend.

Choose Phuket If…

You’re staying in Phuket for your whole trip and want something close to your hotel. There are tailors on almost every main street in Patong, Kata and Karon, so they’re easy to find.

Keep in mind that resort-area rents are high, and that often shows up in the price more than in the quality. Quality also varies a lot from shop to shop, so check recent Google or TripAdvisor reviews before you sit down.

Good fit: short Phuket stays where you don’t want to travel.

Choose Khao Lak If…

You’re on a slower beach holiday and want the process to feel personal, not rushed. Khao Lak is about an hour and a half north of Phuket airport, and many guests stay here for a week or more. That’s ideal for tailoring, because a good suit needs at least one proper fitting.

There are fewer tailors here, and the established ones depend on hotel referrals and returning guests rather than street touts. At Mark One Tailor, we’ve worked from Khao Lak since 2002. We also offer fittings at hotels like JW Marriott, Sentido Graceland and Merlin Beach, so you don’t have to leave your holiday to try on your suit.

Good fit: couples, families, wedding parties and anyone who wants a relaxed, unhurried fitting.

Match the City to Your Order

What you’re ordering matters as much as where you’re staying:

  • One or two shirts: Anywhere reputable will do. Shirts are simple and quick.
  • A business suit: Allow at least two to three days with a fitting. Most single garments take about that long here.
  • A wedding suit or multiple pieces: Allow closer to a week. Choose somewhere you’ll stay long enough for proper fittings, not a two-night stopover.
  • Premium imported fabric: Ask to see the actual roll of fabric before it’s cut, wherever you are.

The One Rule That Applies Everywhere

The city matters less than how you found the tailor. If a driver, tout or stranger in the street brought you there, walk away. If the deal is “only today”, walk away. If they promise a finished suit in a few hours, walk away.

We’ve covered the warning signs in more detail in our guide to common tailoring scams in Thailand. If you’d like to know exactly what a suit should cost before you walk in, see our Khao Lak suit price guide.
